Using GCSEPod to impact results

After seeing GCSEPod at the GESS conference, Principal, Nan Billingham recognised how well it would fit into the teaching ethos and practice at the school. “We took part in the Value Added Project, which directly compares CAT4 target grades to actual GCSE grades achieved. The usage of the GCSEPod had a positive impact and was used as a strategic resource during revision.”

School of Research Science

The School of Research Science (SRS) was founded in 1998 to provide education for the children of local Emirati families. Since that time, the school has seen a dramatic expansion linked directly to its growth in popularity and now around one third of the school’s intake is from non-Emirati background. Today the school is a very successful 3-18 school with a student role of 3,500 with specialist state of the art facilities.

As the name suggests, one of the core philosophies of the school is a belief in knowledge through self-learning, exploration, critical thinking and enquiry in the context of the theory of multiple intelligences. With that in mind, when Nan Billingham, Principal of the school saw a presentation on GCSEPod at the GESS conference in February 2018, she immediately recognised how well it would fit into the teaching ethos and practice at the school and decided to subscribe.

Nan put Eloise Morgan, Assistant Head Teacher, in charge of launching and rolling out the programme, with the support from the specialist Project

I have no hesitation in recommending GCSEPod to other international schools.

Management from GCSEPod. This year, the school also launched Google Classroom right across the Secondary School. GCSEPod integrates with many MIS, including that used by SRS (SIMS) which meant it was quick and easy to set work for students. As soon as Eloise showed the teaching staff how GCSEPod pods (the 3-5 minute subject knowledge videos) could be embedded into Google lessons, the teachers took to it and it rapidly became an essential teaching tool, supporting Flipped Learning inside the classroom as well as provide on-going learning resources outside the classroom. GCSEPod is also now also used for intervention support as well as helping parents to guide their children through their home studies.

Nan Billingham, Principal, said: “The School of Research Science took part in the Value Added Project, which directly compares CAT4 target grades to actual GCSE grades achieved. The usage of the GCSEPod had a positive impact and was used as a strategic resource during revision.”

Eloise, Assistant Head Teacher, said: “Using GCSEPod as a revision resource had a positive impact on our 2018 GCSE results and it was noticeable that our subjects with the highest GCSE performance also had the highest GCSEPod usage.”
