How has the shift to linear exams changed teaching and learning at your school?
We’ve jumped all over the research on retrieval practice, spaced learning and interleaving like kids in a trampoline park. We quiz manically, with students answering hundreds of questions a week in science and English alone. We keep teaching students model answers so they can learn to get 100%. Obviously, we practise exam questions too.
What role does GCSEPod have to play in this?
So, teachers struggle to admit a podcast might be better than their teaching (they’re scripted, redrafted and rehearsed so should be better!) But students love the dual coding of image, text and voice, pods’ brevity and the ability to replay and self-test. League tables each fortnight foster competition in tutor groups. Having two mocks
helps too.
How easy is it to persuade students to make full use of the ‘Pods’?
League tables and chocolate prizes
are surprisingly persuasive. Once they start, students realise it works, and they keep going. Boys love the competition, public recognition, and the lack of writing involved. Underachievers catch on as pods
are less intimidating than doing exam questions.
And how does it help teachers?
Pods are easy to set as homework. Even better to introduce a topic, in class. Teachers can test students on 10 key points from the podcast at different points in the lesson. Three podcasts will teach 30 concepts or facts in a cover lesson (so absent teachers never have to set work), with time to retest. We’ll get there.
Do you have any evidence of the impact GCSEPod is having on outcomes?
Like, totally. We match pod watching
to progress 8. The top 10 students (measured by progress) watch more
than the top 20, who watch more than the top 30, and so on. 3.5 hours of pods in any subject usually beats the top 20% target grade. Your teacher might be stuck in a snowdrift, but you can still get grade 7. Pod on.

so far this year in the lead up to the 2018 GCSE Exams.
