Subscribing schools achieve stellar results

In a year of significant change for secondary education, we are delighted that GCSEPod once again proved to be a vital tool for thousands of students up and down the country. And, as the new term started, teachers from Suffolk to Southampton were keen to share their schools’ good news stories with us.

Here’s just some of the feedback we’ve had from you.

Castle Manor Academy

“2017 was a record breaking year for Castle Manor Academy, which coincided with our best ever results when looking at the basic measure. We went from 46% A*–C in English and Maths to 62.3% 9–4 in English and Maths – a rise of 16.3%.

Our science department saw a big improvement, particularly in triple science, where we above the National Average. This was also the case for Core Science. Alongside this, our Pupil Premium gap closed by over 13% and the gender gap closed by 8%.

Overall, we were looking for our 9–4 EM percentage to start with a 5 and it was wonderful to see it start with a 6!!!

GCSEPod usage was biggest in English, Maths and Science – and these were our most improved results. It is clear it has helped knowledge retention and means students are going into exams more confident.

“This year, revision became a bigger deal at school with competitions between students over how many they had watched. We also used tutor time to give students assignments on GCSEPod.”

“81% 4–9 in English says it all really. We have improved year-on-year as a whole school and this year is no exception. With the new exams in Maths and English we were nervous, but there was no need. Our students worked so hard and used GCSEPod so much to help them.

Our students love it. We had a subscription for just English at first but have adopted it for all subjects now and the difference is amazing. Our students are asking for it in lesson.

The usage before exams was phenomenal and students all agreed it has helped them. The fact they can access it anywhere is fantastic and parents love it, too. You rock GCSEPod!”

Wrekin College

“We have record A* and A*–A percentages this year (18% and over 44% respectively) – our highest since A* grades were introduced. We achieved a 100% pass rate in English Language – and students used GCSEPod for this for the first time this year. Also, science results were very strong and they were the top-used subjects on GCSEPod.

Overall this is the largest usage of GCSEPod we’ve ever seen from a year group (over 300% increase on last year). Coincidence?!

The best thing about GCSEPod is that students can watch it wherever or whenever they wish. They can also learn/revise independently in bite-size chunks, which they can replay over and over until they’ve got it.”

Rivermead School

“All my learners have Special Educational Needs and have EHCPs. Many of them were told from a young age they would never achieve anything in English. Yet they did. I am immensely proud of them. They worked hard, kept their cool during exams and achieved the results they deserved. I am so proud of what they achieved.

GCSEPod was an exceptionally useful tool; a way of consolidating knowledge and understanding. Learners need visual stimulation and these short ‘Pods’ were great for recapping taught material. Learners were able to revise at home and did not feel they were giving up much time to do so. Many learners with ASD or social communication difficulties find the concept of studying at home very challenging. GCSEPod was able to break some of those barriers. I also liked setting quiz questions based on the Pods so I could ensure good learning was taking place!

There were many pleasing results. One lad springs to mind – ASD, highly dyslexic and with no confidence in reading. He managed to get 4 in literature. GCSEPod contributed to that because he learnt to make notes from the Pods, consolidated his learning aurally and was able to retain relevant information.”

“Results were really good this year and the pass rate increased by 10% thanks to GCSEPod. More and more pupils are logging on to use the resources in the website as an alternative to traditional revision methods.

It’s a fantastic revision aid! Pupils can use it anywhere on their smartphones and I think that really appeals to them. One of the most pleasant surprises was seeing pupils who were predicted less than a four not only achieving a four but some even achieving a grade 5.”

“Yes, GCSEPod has helped drive results in our school. Pupils really engaged with the material and were listening right up until the exam.

“GCSEPod has helped as our school achieved very high in Maths and English and found they used a lot of GCSEPod. This is something I can work on as a Science teacher as I feel I could have encouraged the students to use more GCSEPod in my science lessons.

The year 11’s in my bottom set class did extremely well. They achieved C–D grades and were sitting on an F before I started teaching them. I noticed lots of students in that particular class using GCSEPod, so I strongly feel it contributed to their achievement.

Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi

“Really proud of our GCSE English Language and English Literature results – there was a marked improvement in the number of pupils gaining an Aor A* grade. It meant even more when several pupils who struggled nailed that C grade in English. You know that they will be able to carry that with them throughout their lives.

In our subject we are seeing a clear correlation between a pupil’s success and the frequency with which they use GCSEPod. A number of pupils in Year 10 performed well above expectation in their Literature exam this year. When we looked at the GCSE data, we found that they had viewed hundreds of podcasts. In particular it helped with coverage. At times, we struggle to complete the course as fully as we would wish; GCSEPod fills those gaps and gives pupils that boost of info. It also helps as another perspective on a character or theme.

I have no doubt that GCSEPod contributed to these results which is why the school opts to keep the package year on year. GCSEPod is my additional teacher and it makes us feel more secure when we know pupils have access to a wide bank of podcasts outside of school hours.”

Kennet School

“Over 500 of our GCSE grades were A* or A (or the equivalent) and the percentage of pupils who gained the EBacc qualification jumped to 37% against the national average of 24% in 2016. This is matched by 100% pass rate in BTec qualifications with an amazing 40% gaining grade B or above.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly as it is a combination of things, but our usage by our Year 11s last year was 100% and feedback suggests that once the pupils had left on study leave it was a great source of revision material. I think it is a very targeted piece of software and a huge benefit to GCSE pupils. We are now trying to focus teachers on including it in their lessons as flipped learning.”

“Some of our most vulnerable students made massive gains in their attainment due to using GCSEPod and getting the little rewards for being a high user seemed to galvanise some to do even more revision.”

“This year we saw a continued upward trajectory and in particular record-breaking success in English and Maths. GCSEPod is new to the school but the students took to it with gusto watching thousands of Pods between them. I believe this gave several of them a much-needed focus with their revision programmes.”

“The exam results were over and above anyone’s expectations. My girls worked hard to retain the knowledge.

“100% of our year 11 students achieved at least 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C.

82% achieved at least 5 GCSEs including Maths, English and/or Welsh at grades A*-C. An impressive 27% of grades were at A* or A compared to the national average of 19.4%.

We strongly believe that GCSEPod has played an important role in improving the outcomes for some of our pupils. Indeed, some of our top users exceeded their target grades in many areas and have now returned to the sixth form to continue their studies at A level.”
